Total Awards: 17 grants, $230,627.50 Bridgeport Bridgeport Public Library $4,000 Bridgeport Collective Memory: Unlocking the Past for the Future With $4,250 in CHDF funding, the Bridgeport Public Library will continue an ongoing project to collect oral histories of city residents and research images from its historical photograph library to create a series of "time and place" exhibits that will be displayed at the library. Cornwall Cornwall Historical Society $3,000 Cornwall Historical Society - Phase 2 Inventory As part of a two-year collections assessment program, the Cornwall Historical Society received $3,000 to hire a museum consultant to catalog and assess items from the society's collections, including engravings, posters, maps and other documents. Hartford Antiquarian and Landmarks Society $10,000 Heroes, Nationalism & Human Rights The Antiquarian and Landmarks Society, which maintains eleven historic sites in the state, received $10,000 in CHDF funding to conduct a two-day conference for a variety of history and heritage professionals on the role of heroes in historical representations. The conference is co hosted by the Prudence Crandall Museum, Thomas J. Dodd Center, Connecticut Archaeology Center, Connecticut Repertory Theater and the Office of the State Historian. Connecticut Heritage Foundation $9,800 Museum of Connecticut History Strategic Plan The Connecticut Heritage Foundation, a nonprofit foundation established to support the Connecticut State Library and Raymond E. Baldwin Museum of Connecticut History, received $9,800 in CHDF funds to develop a strategic plan for the museum that will raise its visibility in the public eye and ensure it remains a valuable resource for Connecticut residents. Connecticut Historical Society $80,000 Old State House Long-Term Exhibition The Connecticut Historical Society, stewards of downtown Hartford's Old State House, received $80,000 in CHDF support to create a 6,800 square foot, long-term exhibition at the Old State House that enables visitors to explore the many ways in which history surrounds us and informs our daily lives, using the history of Hartford as a backdrop. The CHC previously provided $20,000 to plan the exhibition. Mark Twain House $2,400 The Twain Lecture Series: Lecture by Ron Powers The Mark Twain House and Museum was awarded $2,400 to host a public lecture on the life and cultural impact of Mark Twain by Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Ron Powers, who authored two biographies on the celebrated Hartford resident. Ivoryton Ivoryton Library Association $4,000 Legacies of White Gold The Ivoryton Library Association received $4,250 to produce a documentary on the ivory industry in the town, based on the first-person accounts with town residents who were involved in the ivory trade in Africa and the production of ivory items for the American market. Lebanon Lebanon Historical Society $4,949 Lebanon: Heartbeat of the Revolution - an Exhibition & Hands-on room The Lebanon Historical Society received CHDF funding to create programs and exhibitions on the town's role in the American Revolutionary War as part of the upcoming 225th commemoration of General Rochambeau's march through Connecticut en route to the battle at Yorktown. Mystic Denison Society $2,500 Cataloging and Photographing the Denison Society's Archives and Artifacts The Denison Society, stewards of the Denison Homestead in Mystic, received a $2,500 CHDF grant to continue a project to inventory and document the archives, pictures, books and objects which comprise the society's historical collections. The society will create a database of the objects to aid historical research. New London New London Main Street Corporation $2,500 Historic Waterfront District Map & Guide New London Main Street, one of the National Trust for Historic Preservation's many Main Street programs in Connecticut promoting downtown revitalization through preservation efforts, received funding to reprint their waterfront guide for tourists, which includes a map, information on historic sites in the district, and a dining and shopping guide. Norwich Slater Memorial Museum $2,000 Curatorial Consultancy for the Norwich Galleries The Slater Memorial Museum received $2,250 in technical assistance support to engage a curatorial consultant to evaluate the museums collections of Norwich historical materials and develop a reinterpretation and reinstallation plan for a series of "Norwich Galleries" to celebrate the city's heritage. Old Lyme Florence Griswold Museum $86,000 Griswold House Reinterpretation Project: A Country Retreat for Artists The Florence Griswold Museum received this $86,000 CHDF award to implement a major reinterpretation of the National Historic Landmark Florence Griswold House that recreates its role as a boarding house for artists circa 1910, where many internationally-knows American Impressionist artists painted at the turn of the century. The CHC previously provided over $36,000 in funding to plan for the reinterpretation's themes and exhibitions. Pleasant Valley Barkhamsted Historical Society, Inc. $3,000 Collection Foundation Project The Barkhamsted Historical Society received $3,000 to identify and implement "best practices" for the acquisition, cataloging and preservation of its historical collections. The society will hire a consultant to develop procedures and train collection catalogers. Weston Weston Woods Institute $4,000 Weston Woods Institute Strategic Study Weston Woods Institute, the birthplace of films for children in America, received a $4,000 technical assistance grant to conduct a study of the site's potential as a cultural and educational resource. Windsor Windsor Chamber of Commerce $5,000 A Barn Raising in Windsor, Connecticut The Windsor Chamber of Commerce was awarded $5,250 in CHDF support to recreate a community barn raising on the town's historic Palisado Green to coincide with the Smithsonian Institution's Barn Again! exhibition at the Windsor Historical Society. Barn Again! makes its third and final Connecticut stop in Windsor under funding from the Humanities Council. Windsor Historical Society $5,000 Barn Again! At Windsor Historical Society: Programs, Marketing and Companion Exhibition The Windsor Historical Society was awarded a CHDF grant to create programs and conduct marketing for the Smithsonian Institution's Barn Again exhibition, on tour in the state with funding from the Connecticut Humanities Council. Programs created under the grant include a companion exhibition on the history of tobacco farming in the state as well as collaborative programming with local schools and agricultural organizations. Windsor Locks New England Air Museum $2,479 New England Air Museum Official Visitors Guide The New England Air Museum received $2,478.50 in CHDF funding to redesign and reprint its visitors guide, which helps orient visitors to the museum's collections and exhibitions. |
