Ezra Stiles
(1727-1795)
Birdsall,
Richard D. “Ezra Stiles Versus the New Divinity Men.” American
Quarterly 17(Summer, 1965).
Holmes,
Abiel. The Life of Ezra Stiles … President of Yale College.
Boston: Thomes & Andres, 1798. Stiles had his forty volumes
of notebooks sent to Holmes. Holmes’ work is based on those volumes,
with some quotations not found subsequently by anyone.
Morgan,
Edmund Sears. The Gentle Puritan: A Life of Ezra Stiles, 1727-1795.
New Haven: Yale University Press, 1962. This is a masterful biography
by one of America’s most distinguished living historians. Morgan
describes and elucidates the intellectual and religious climate
in which the president of Yale (1778-1795) moved. Provides much
information about and insight into Connecticut life and politics,
and gives us a clear understanding of the man.
