Samson Occom
(1723-1792)
Blodgett,
Harold. Samson Occam. Hanover, N.H.: Dartmouth College,
1935. An attempt to present the character and significance of
the Mohegan Indian missionary who inspired the founding and nourished
the funding (through efforts in England) of Dartmouth College.
This is a sound study by a scholar.
Love,
W. DeLoss. Samson Occam and the Christian Indians of New England. Boston:
Pilgrim Press, 1899. This is a full study, with more information
than the Richardson book. It discusses Connecticut and New England
Indians generally, as well as giving the whole Occom story. A
very valuable work. An appendix includes family histories of
some Brothertown Indians, now living in Wisconsin.
Richardson,
Leon Burr, ed. An Indian Preacher in New England. Hanover,
N.H.: Dartmouth College, 1933. This is a collection of the letters
of Samson Occom while on his fund-raising tour in 1766-68
to finance the establishment of Dartmouth.
