John Mason
(1600-1672)
Mason,
Louis Bond. The Life and Times of Major John Mason of Connecticut:
1600-1672. New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1935. A book for
general readers but one that will bore students. Not a scholarly
study; no citations, modest bibliography, fair index. Concludes
with a flourish of praise: "There is no manlier or more heroic
figure than this in all our colonial history." (p. 336) Raymond
Steams' review in the New England Quarterly 10(1937): 151-52
pastes this work for inaccuracies, errors, and oversimplification:
"Loyal Americans will find little to assist their understanding
of the principles and motives which led to the founding of this
republic or of the life and services of... Mason."
