Thomas Hooker (1586-1647)

Ahlstrom, Sidney E. "Thomas Hooker—Puritanism and Democratic Citizenship: A Preliminary Inquiry into some Relationships of Religion and American Civic Responsibility," Church History 32(1962-1963):415-31. Includes a general discussion of Hooker's historical reputation and outlines problems facing the prospective biographer.

Archibald, Warren S. Thomas Hooker. Tercentenary pamphlet IV(1934). Jones, James William, III. "The Beginnings of American Theology: John Cotton, Thomas Hooker, Thomas Shepard and Peter Pulkeley." Doctoral dissertation, Brown, 1970. A highly esoteric analysis of Hooker's theology in relation to that of other important early New England Puritan preachers. Jones places each man on a scale of Christocentrism, with Hooker second to Cotton.

Miller, Perry. "Thomas Hooker and the Democracy of Early Connecticut." New England Quarterly 4(1931).

Shuffelton, Frank. Thomas Hooker, 1586-1647. Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1977. A scholarly work showing Hooker's determination to find a way to grace by discovering what it is and how to cultivate it. Best on the subject. Shuffelton lists many relevant items that do not appear here, including four doctoral dissertations on Hooker. Serious students must consult his excellent bibliographical essay.
