Croushore and D. M. Potter. Hamden, Conn.: Archon, 1948. This
work, edited by two distinguished authorities, consists of a
twenty-three-page biographical notice and then a collection of
DeForest's reports and writings as a Union officer in the Reconstruction
South. The introduction includes a literary critique by Croushore.

is a professor of American Literature, and his work is principally
literary.
Potter,
David M. "John William DeForest." Papers of the
NHCHS 10(1951):188-203. DeForest wrote nineteen books and many
magazine articles. He was, as William Dean Howells said, a realist
before realism in literature was invented. Potter was a distinguished
historian of the American Civil War.
