John Brown (1800-1859)

Abels, Jules C. Man on Fire: John Brown and the Cause of Liberty. New York Macmillan, 1971.

Boyer, Richard 0. The Legend of John Brown: A Biography and History. New York Knopf, 1973.

Nelson, Truman. The Old Man: John Brown and Harper's Ferry. New York: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1973.

Oates, Stephen. To Purge this Land with Blood New York Harper and Row, 1970. Perhaps the best of four biographies of Brown done in the 1970s.

Ruchames, Louis, ed. A John Brown Reader. New York: Abelard-Schuman, 1959. Collected writings by and about the abolitionist. "Within a single volume there have never before been assembled so many basic documents, so ably edited, for understanding and appraising New England's most disturbing hero." (Charles H. Foster, New England Quarterly 331960:423.) Nevertheless, Foster identifies a couple of significant omissions.

Villard, Oswald Garrison. John Brown, 1800-1859: A Biography Fifty Years After. Boston & New York: Houghton Mifflin, 1910. A very heavy tome. Huge bibliography; appendix of Brown documents (30 pages); full citations; index.

Warren, Robert Venn. John Brown; the Making of a Martyr New York: Payson and Clarke, 1929. Little here that deals with Connecticut, but there is a good bibliography and bibliographical essay. Modest index.
